What makes raw New Zealand Manuka honey so special?

Raw monofloral New Zealand Manuka honey is the only 100% natural food in the world that has been scientifically proven to have unique, stable and reliable bioactivity. This makes manuka honey considered one of the most unique natural products worldwide.

In 2006, German scientists led by Professor Thomas Henle (Dresden University of Technology) demonstrated that the naturally occurring substance methylglyoxal (MGO) is solely responsible for these exceptional properties.

MGO – a scientifically confirmed indicator of bioactivity

Manuka honey is the only food in the world in which a natural methylglyoxal content of approximately 20 to 1500 mg/kg has been found. For comparison – common types of honey contain only 0–5 mg/kg MGO, other foods usually 0–10 mg/kg (exception is coffee or cocoa).

There is a simple and proven rule: the higher the MGO value, the higher the bioactivity of the manuka honey. The MGO value is always clearly stated on the label and marked with the gold MGO symbol.

According to him, MGO testing is a reliable and quantitative method that directly correlates with the level of bioactivity of honey.

Professor Peter Molan (University of Waikato, New Zealand) has been studying manuka honey since 1985. His research has laid the foundation for understanding the specific properties of manuka honey, especially in the field of medical applications.

MUDr. Robert J. F. Laheij, PhD, a gastroenterologist, confirmed that manuka honey with a value of MGO 550+ exhibits very specific properties that can be directly attributed to its high methylglyoxal content.
