How to store Medjool dates?
You can store Medjool dates in many ways. Always store them in a closed container so that they do not dry out. They will last for 1-2 months at room temperature, 6-10 months in the refrigerator and over a year in the freezer. Dates can be refrozen due to the low active water content and therefore low bacterial activity in dates.
In any case, trust yourself and your nose when deciding whether dates are still good or not.
Medjool dates are the fruits of the "Phoenix dactylifera", which is the date palm. There are many varieties belonging to this family. The most famous varieties are Deglet Nour, Medjool and Halawi. The Medjool date variety has become very popular due to its intense sweet taste, large size and soft juicy consistency.
Medjool dates are also called Medjoul, Madjhul, Medjul. Sometimes we hear exotic names like "King of Dates", "Dates of Kings", Jumbo Dates and the like, all of which refer to Medjool dates.
Medjool dates grow in hot and dry climates. Large commercial plantations are located in Israel, the Jordan Valley, the Palestinian Authority, the USA - California, Mexico, South Africa, Namibia, Morocco, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
These dates come from the Jordan Valley, which is located between the Dead Sea and the Sea of Galilee. Why from there? Medjool dates from the Jordan Valley have a special quality: they are darker, softer and juicier than dates from other origins.
Each year, the trees produce one harvest. Harvest time in the northern hemisphere is from September to November, in the southern hemisphere from March to May.
Medjool dates are graded by size, which is determined by grams per fruit, and are graded by skin separation - the amount that is free from the date fruit skin-flesh.
This quality grading is purely optical. This means that all export dates are actually the same in terms of internal quality, freshness, taste, texture, etc. Sometimes high skin separation makes the date look like it has been "dried", but the opposite is true. High skin separation is usually a sign of a very juicy, moist date.
More expensive dates (larger with low skin separation) are therefore not tastier or better than smaller dates with higher skin separation.
