Chaga (Chaga - lat. Inonotus obliquus) in Czech Rezavec šikmý
Chaga - Chaga is a wood-decaying fungus from the family of leathery trees. It grows most often on birches, less often on other deciduous trees in northern Europe, Russia and further in colder regions of Asia and North America. In traditional medicine in Russia and has been used since the 16th century, in Asia it has been used for several thousand years. The first mentions of Chaga treatment come from the northern regions of China. Then its use spread west to Siberia and the Urals, where Chaga was drunk as tea daily. Scientists found that in these areas the incidence of cancer was very low among the inhabitants and stomach diseases were practically non-existent. Many people in these Siberian areas who drank Chaga daily often lived to be around 100 years old.
Chaga contains more than 200 different biologically active substances
In terms of pharmacological effects, the most important are polysaccharides, polyphenolic substances and lanostane-type triterpenoids. Of the polysaccharides, these are mainly beta-glucans and heteroglucans, and of the triterpenes, inotodiol, obliquol, betulin and betulinic acid (these are obtained by the Chaga mushroom from its host tree, birch). Furthermore, the mushroom contains sesquiterpenes, sterols, lipids and alkaloids. Chaga contains a high amount of melanin – a pigment that contributes to its color.
