Graviola is the Portuguese name for a plant that is commonly grown and consumed in Latin America. Graviola is a small tree from the tropical part of Peru growing at altitudes of around 1,000 m above sea level. It is characterized by evergreen, green, elongated, shiny leaves, tasty and nutritious fruits, known as guanabana. Other common names are bottle gourd, anona and Brazilian papaya. Whatever we call this tropical evergreen tree, it produces fruits with white flesh, many large seeds and a very sweet, sour taste. Since the flesh is difficult to eat, it is usually made into juice.
Graviola grows in the rainforest and has been part of the natural and traditional medicine of Central and South America and the Caribbean for centuries. It has an exceptional range of effects divided into different parts of the plant. The fruits are used, but also other parts of the plant - leaves, stem, bark, roots and seeds. The leaves of Graviola contain the most active substances. Scientists have recently begun to investigate the potential of bioactive compounds in the leaves, stem and seeds of graviola called bottle acetogenins. Graviola contains highly effective isoquinol alkaloids – asimilobine, nornuciferin and anonain, acetogenin, tannins, polyphenols, unsaturated fatty acids, vitamin C and others.
