He Shou Wu

He Shou Wu (pronounced he-shou-wu) is one of the most popular and most valued strengthening herbs in Asian herbal medicine. He Shou Wu is the processed root tuber of the Polygonum multiflorum plant (multi-flowered polyantha), which grows in the mountainous regions of central and southern China. It is one of the main herbs in Chinese herbal medicine that strengthens the essence (jing).
Thanks to the ability to accumulate a huge amount of qi in the root, this herb can strengthen human and animal organs and also nourish and strengthen the blood. He Shou Wu is not a stimulant. However, it is one of the best energy-giving means known to mankind. Its effect is cumulative, as is the case with any truly healthy dietary supplement with a strengthening effect. The processed root of Rheum glutinosa is traditionally called the "kidney's own food". The tuberous root of the Polygonum multiflorum plant (He Shou Wu) contains many active ingredients. He Shou Wu is rich in anthraquinones, including many phospholipids, such as lecithin (3.7%). The main active ingredient responsible for the very strong antioxidant effects of He Shou Wu is considered to be a stilbene glycoside called 2,3,5,4-tetrahydroxystilbene-2-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (hereinafter referred to as the “superglycoside He Shou Wu”). He Shou Wu contains many similar stilbene glycosides. The stilbene glycosides in He Shou Wu are very similar to resveratrol. However, some of the stilbene glycosides in this herb are stronger antioxidants than resveratrol.
