What is the origin of propolis?
Propolis is a sticky, waxy substance that bees produce from resin, which they obtain from tree buds (mainly poplars, birches, elderberries, willows, lindens and conifers).
The bees process this resin with their salivary enzymes and mix it with beeswax and pollen to form a golden brown to reddish brown substance, propolis.
Propolis is hard and brittle at low temperatures, softens at temperatures above 30 °C and melts at temperatures around 60-70 °C. Propolis comes from the Greek and means suburb, which actually means a protective barrier.
Bees use propolis to seal cracks and holes in the hive, strengthen the combs (homes for larval cells) and keep them germ-free, ensure a constant optimal temperature and protect the colony from germs, insects and foreign substances.
Propolis appeared as early as the time of the Egyptians, who used it to embalm the deceased.
The Incas knew propolis primarily for its soothing effect on the respiratory tract.
The Greek Aristotle used it primarily to support the regenerative abilities of the skin.
