Boswellia is an extract that has been shown to inhibit inflammatory factors, supporting joint and arterial health. This dietary supplement contains standardized Boswellia serrata, AprèsFlex®, which is 52% more absorbable than standard boswellia extracts.

5-Lipoxygenase ( 5-LOX ) is a member of the lipoxygenase family of enzymes. It converts fatty acids into leukotrienes and its levels increase with age. Excessive levels of the enzyme 5-LOX trigger inflammatory responses that are associated with aging-related effects.

Foods rich in omega-6 fatty acids, such as red meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products, trigger an overproduction of arachidonic acid.

In response to high levels of arachidonic acid, the body produces the enzyme 5-LOX. 5-LOX converts arachidonic acid into pro-inflammatory compounds such as leukotriene B4, a molecule that mediates attacks on joints, arterial walls, and other tissues.

The good news is that an extract from the Indian plant Boswellia serrata has been shown to neutralize 5-LOX. Boswellia, which has been used for centuries to help with inflammation, acts as a natural 5-LOX inhibitor, blocking its adverse effects.

The key to its beneficial effects appears to be a boswellia compound called AKBA (3-O-acetyl-11-keto-ß-boswellic acid).

The problem is that boswellia is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream. For this reason, a form of boswellia called AprèsFlex® is being introduced, which is absorbed into the blood much better than the currently available boswellia extracts.
