Zinc is one of the most abundant trace elements in the body and is essential for health. It is found in bones, muscles, liver, kidneys and skin. The body cannot produce or store zinc itself, so it must obtain enough of this trace mineral from food. You can get the most zinc from seafood, as absorption from animal foods is better. Cereals and legumes also contain zinc, but the phytates found in these foods reduce its absorption. Therefore, if you eat little or no seafood, you may develop a deficiency.

What is zinc good for?
Zinc is part of a large number of enzymes that are involved in metabolism. Zinc is needed, among other things, for the construction of proteins and the growth and development of tissues.

Am I deficient in zinc?
The recommended daily allowance for men is 9 milligrams of zinc and for women 7 milligrams. However, the actual need for zinc can vary greatly depending on factors such as age, gender, chronic diseases, sports, pregnancy or medications. These factors affect the need for zinc (increased in veganism, pregnancy, diabetes, smoking or chronic stress), zinc absorption (reduced in digestive problems) or zinc excretion (increased in kidney disease, heart failure or alcoholism).

Symptoms of zinc deficiency can include hair loss, loss of smell and taste, white spots on the nails, poor wound healing, reduced immunity to infections, and night blindness.

What is zinc gluconate?
If you start looking for a zinc supplement, you will soon find that there are many different types and forms of this popular trace element. The different names tell you something about the substance with which the zinc is combined. The pure form of zinc is not absorbable by the body, so it is necessary to bind it to another substance. Ideally, this should be an organic substance, because an unnatural bond prevents absorption.

Zinc gluconate is bound to gluconic acid, a substance that the body also produces from glucose. This organic bond ensures better absorption of zinc than inorganically bound zinc salts such as zinc oxide and zinc sulfate.

Recommended dosage:
Take 1 tablet once daily during or after meals with water. Do not exceed the recommended dosage.
