Glutamine or L-glutamine plays a role in immune protection, protein synthesis, maintaining the integrity of the intestinal walls and acid-base balance. It is also used for the endogenous production of glucosamine, an essential component of cartilage.

Glutamine is not considered an essential amino acid a priori, since the body can synthesize it (5 to 10 g per day) according to its needs. 30% of the body's glutamine production is used by the intestine.
